Dates usually come with a side order of nerves, but young people have resorted to a tall glass of fun instead of a pitcher of beer.
Alcohol has been a focal point for social interaction for decades, mixing itself into casual catchups, celebrations, parties and dates. Alcohol, also sometimes referred to as ‘liquid courage’, has always been seen as an easy way to loosen up, as it reduces anxiety and gives people a confidence boost in nerve-wracking situations, like a first date.
However, Gen-Z (people born between 1997 – 2012) have noticeably been decreasing their alcohol consumption in recent years, turning away from the liquor bottle in favour of creating genuine human connections and being “sober curious”, a cultural movement that focuses on reducing drinking and prioritising mental and physical wellness. Drinkaware states that one in four Gen-Z adults do not drink alcohol at all and 49% of young adults choose low, or no alcohol drink alternatives.
According to Hinge’s 2025 D.A.T.E Report, 67% of Gen-Z said that they wanted to build a romantic connection without the reliance on alcohol, and only 21% of Gen-Z would drink on a first date. This change is moving young people away from drinking culture and into a sober society.
Many places all over London offer non-alcohol and fun workshops and events weekly, allowing people and their date to enjoy themselves without reaching for alcohol. LoveLens has picked out a few date night ideas that are welcome to everyone and sure to keep you and your date entertained.
