Alden’s cardigan: ‘It’s like wearing a big hug’

Finding that perfect vintage treasure hits differently. It’s the simple pleasure of scoring that unique item that seems to have been made just for you. Every day a reader hypes up their best vintage find. Alden, 32, knows he’ll never find a piece quite as special as his Missoni cardigan.

What is your favourite vintage piece?

It’s an 80s textured Missoni cardigan.

Where and when did you buy it?

I used to be obsessed with shopping at Buffalo Exchange (a shop in Buffalo, USA, where you can buy, sell or trade secondhand clothing) and went at least once a week. I found this cardigan there back in 2008 or 2009.

What made the cardigan catch your attention?

The colours and the geometric print drew me in. Most people associate Missoni with their zigzag print.

Why do you like it so much?

I love it because of its unique texture, colour and details. It’s special to me, as it’s a piece I know I will not find again. When I was younger I was going to sell it to Wasteland – a retail store in LA. They priced it at $75, and that’s when I realised it was a valuable piece.

How often do you wear it?

I don’t wear it too often, but I just can’t seem to part with it.

How does it make you feel when you wear it?

It’s like wearing a big hug. It makes me feel nostalgic, as I’ve owned it for about 15 years now.

How much did it cost?

The cardigan cost me less than $20 (about £14) and I’m sure it’s worth at least $78 (£55). When I first purchased it the value was even higher, somewhere in the hundreds.

Can you describe a day when you wore this item that you remember fondly?

I worked at Urban Outfitters and this girl completely freaked out about how great it looked. It always got me lots of compliments and that’s why I love it so much and keep it around.
