Lauren’s jacket: ‘It belonged to my grandma’

Finding that perfect vintage treasure hits differently. It’s the simple pleasure of scoring that unique item that seems to have been made just for you. Every day a reader hypes up their best vintage find. Lauren, 23, loves the leather coat her grandma gave her.

What is your favourite vintage piece?

It’s a black leather coat! It’s a sort of an in-between length, longer than a leather jacket but shorter than a Matrix-style coat. It has quite a straight, androgynous fit and is originally from a brand called Lakeland – presumably not the kitchenware shop, but who knows! It belonged to my grandmother, who gave it to me a couple of years ago.

Where and when did you buy it?

I didn’t buy it, but had been eyeing it up for years.

What made the coat catch your attention?

The coat is amazing quality and I’d never buy leather new – as I try not to buy new clothing at all really. I just couldn’t resist this one. It’s also kind of special as it belonged to my grandmother.

Why do you like it so much?

I like it because it’s high quality and super versatile – I wear it casually, with evening outfits and over my work clothes.

How often do you wear it?

I wear it all the time! It’s surprisingly warm, so I’ll probably wear it less in summer but at the moment as long as it’s dry it works.

How does it make you feel when you wear it?

It’s really comfortable and an easy way to upscale a look, so I’d say it makes me feel confident.

How much did it cost?

I honestly have no idea!

Can you describe a day when you wore this item that you remember fondly?

I wore it on my first day at a new job – I didn’t want to wear a blazer and look super formal, but also didn’t have many other outer layers that would work. It was perfect!
