The 10 most impactful amenities in the new Santiago Bernabéu

,

Real Madrid stands firmly as one of the world’s greatest football teams. Now their home, the Santiago Bernabéu, is recognised by the World Football Summit (WFS) as being one of the world’s best football stadiums. Although reconstruction took five years, the stadium was finalised by companies L35, Ribas & Ribas Architects and gmp Architects in 2024. Offering a variety of uniquely implemented amenities, the transformation has been covered in the newly released documentary “Megastructures: Real Madrid Super Stadium,” available to watch on the National Geographic Channel and Disney +.

  1. 360-degree video scoreboard

One of the most innovative features is the new 360 degree video scoreboard. It consists of a seamless screen, suspended from the roof of the stadium, that runs around the pitch’s perimeter. Its height will reach 6.5 metres at the sides and corners, and 11 metres at the ends behind the goals at the back. They also feature a newly-added 8-degree inclination to aid viewing angles. It will also incorporate LED lighting to the video—furthering a unique experience for the fans. Santiago Bernabéu will be the third stadium worldwide to have this new feature which previously only existed in two stadiums, both of which were found in the United States.

  1. Modern and sustainable design

The stadium’s new facade has been the most recognisable change. One of the main architects from L35 Architects has said that they wanted to “reflect the spirit of sports and one that would not be static: a dynamic facade”. The modern external look has also been brought inside the stadium. The applied retractable roof offers adaptability to changes in Madrid’s weather during football matches, and can also adapt to any event requirement. It is capable of opening and closing in a total of 15 minutes, limiting interruption and comfort to footballers whilst playing. The introduction of this roof has been an inspiration for the sports industry and other stadiums worldwide

  1. Upgraded seating and exclusivity

The stadium’s prior capacity of 80,000 seats has been increased by around 2,000 seats. Not only will the number of seats increase, but their size will also be updated. The developed chairs will have a width of 55 cm, wider from the previous 45 cm.

  1. Underground parking

After several proposals to Madrid’s government, the football club managed to secure 2000 parking spaces for the stadium. However, this agreement has caused both local and political complaints due to the club’s president, Florentino Perez, having been rumoured to be closely linked with the city’s government.

  1. New venue for E-sports

There will also be spaces for E-sports competitions to be played at the stadium, which has become a crucial aspect to the success of the team after the matches.

  1. Hosting of large-scale events

One of the most impressive adaptations to the new stadium has been the ability to host a variety of events, competitions and tournaments. Some of these include Taylor Swift concerts, NFL Games, and the 2030 Football World Cup

  1. The new Plaza Mahou

Madrid’s emblematic brand of Mahou San Miguel has also joined the new Santiago Bernabeu, creating the new ‘Plaza Mahou‘. The beer Mahou Cinco Estrellas Sin Filtrar will be sold from Monday-Sunday for those who take a tour of the white coliseum.

  1.  Expanded hospitality services

An increase of 1,600 seats has been implemented in the new 250 VIP areas and hospitality lounges. Yet, the most exquisite experience will be offered through the areas such as the SkyBar and SkyWalk, which will present a Michellin-Starred gastronomy and an elegant atmosphere.

  1. Commitment to the environment

The stadium has been entirely renovated in line with energy efficiency criteria. For example, the materials used for the roof are environmentally sustainable through a reduction in the sound and light pollution on the stadium’s exterior.

  1. Changing rooms

The new futuristic changing rooms have also impressed the footballing world. The previous ones already featured luxurious touches—like personalised lockers and a spa area for post-match recovery. However, the club is taking it a step further by adding a dedicated warm-up zone and the latest technology, allowing the coach to deliver real-time briefings and up-to-date talks.
