Running on nothing but adrenaline, one moment she’s backstage at Paris Fashion Week, surrounded by the hum of hairdryers and last-minute make-up touch-ups, the next she’s in a lecture hall in Madrid, poring over dental anatomy. At just 20 years old, Jordanian model and dentistry student Sima Sunna is defying expectations—proving that passion and perseverance can lead to a multi-hyphenate career.

But how does she juggle the glamorous whirlwind of modelling with the rigorous world of academia? And what does it mean to be part of a generation that refuses to be boxed in?

From childhood dreams to runway reality

“I started modelling when I was six or seven, doing little runway shows,” she recalls. It was a childhood dream brought to life through a mix of passion and serendipity. Her breakthrough moment came when she participated in a photoshoot for a friend’s streetwear brand. “The photographer was also the owner of a modelling agency,” she explains. “He booked me on the spot. It all started from there.”

Growing up in a supportive household, her parents encouraged her creativity. However, her father initially had some reservations. “My dad was hesitant at first, because of the traditional stigmas around modelling,” she admits. “But once he saw how dedicated I was, he came around. He realised it wasn’t just a phase—it was something I truly loved.”

Finding balance: university life and the fashion world

Studying dentistry at CEU in Madrid, Sunna prioritises her education. “My studies are always number one,” she says firmly. “Modelling is my side hustle, but my education is my future.”

Balancing an academic workload in one of the most demanding fields—dentistry, which typically requires five to six years of study, is no small feat. Time management is crucial.

“My professors have been really supportive,” she shares. “I’m honest with them when I have a major opportunity, like Paris Fashion Week, and they’ve been understanding.” It’s a balance that demands both discipline and flexibility.

Since moving to Spain alone at 16, she has built a life in Madrid with her sister. She fell in love with the country’s vibrant culture and attended King’s College Soto de Viñuelas, where she pursued the International Baccalaureate (IB) before entering university. Now fluent in Spanish, English, and Arabic, she navigates her diverse experiences with ease.

“There are days I have to choose — if I have an exam and a shoot on the same day, I’ll choose the exam without a doubt,” she says.

Why dentistry?

While modelling has opened doors to incredible experiences, her heart lies in dentistry. “My father’s an orthodontist, so I grew up admiring his work. But beyond that, I love the artistry of cosmetic dentistry,” she explains. “It’s about creating something beautiful and helping people feel more confident.”

Dentistry is one of the most competitive courses to enter, requiring years of rigorous study. The field demands a precise blend of scientific expertise and artistic skill. “In cosmetic dentistry, you’re designing smiles. It’s about symmetry, proportions, and aesthetics — all things I’m familiar with from fashion.”

Embracing both worlds

Sunna rejects the notion that she must choose one path. “People think modelling and dentistry are completely separate, but I disagree. I’ve met so many models who are studying to be doctors, engineers, and architects. Our generation is proving that we can do it all.”

In fact, research shows that Gen Z is particularly driven to pursue multiple passions. A recent study, published by Flair, found that 75% of Gen Zers believe in pursuing side hustles alongside their main careers. This flexibility and determination are defining characteristics of the generation.

She also pushes back against stereotypes that often follow models. “There’s this outdated idea that models aren’t smart or that they’re only valued for their looks. That’s simply not true. You can be a model and have aspirations outside of the industry.”

She also recognises that the modelling world has historically been dominated by a singular standard of beauty—thin, white, and Eurocentric. But she’s proud to say that her own experiences have been largely positive. “I’m so grateful that I’ve never faced issues regarding race on set,” she shares. “The industry is becoming so much more diverse, and it’s amazing to see people of all backgrounds represented. It builds confidence and makes fashion feel more inclusive.”

Levorchy: a brand that took her to fashion week

Although she has worked with many different companies and shot numerous campaigns, the fashion brand that took her to Paris Fashion Week was Levorchy. Founded in 2016, Levorchy is known for its bold designs and dedication to creating high-end, sustainable fashion. With a focus on inclusivity and innovation, the brand quickly gained attention for its avant-garde approach to contemporary fashion. The brand’s unique aesthetic blends modern chic with timeless elegance, and its commitment to sustainability resonates deeply with young, eco-conscious consumers.

Levorchy has given her an amazing opportunity, taking her to Fashion Week to walk on the runway. “Walking for Levorchy was a dream come true,” she says. “They not only gave me the chance to showcase their incredible collection, but they also believed in my potential and supported my career in a way that I’ll never forget.”

Facing criticism and staying true to herself

Criticism is inevitable, but she navigates it with confidence. “I voice my opinions on set. If I’m uncomfortable, I say something. At the end of the day, it’s my image being put out into the world.”

Constructive feedback is part of the job, she acknowledges. “I’m open to direction on how to pose or adjust my expression. But criticism of who I am? That’s never acceptable.”

Words of advice for aspiring models

“Just go for it,” she encourages. “If modelling is your passion, people will see it. Take those first pictures—even on your phone—and send them to agencies. Don’t be afraid of rejection. Ask for feedback, improve, and keep going.”

Persistence is key. “Every ‘no’ gets you closer to a ‘yes.’ Stay confident, stay driven, and don’t let anyone define your worth.”

What’s next for Sima Sunna?

With Milan Fashion Week and another potential stint in Paris, her modelling career shows no signs of slowing down. But even as she graces runways, her focus remains clear. “Dentistry is my calling. Modelling might not last forever, but helping people and transforming smiles will.”

Gen Z is rewriting the rules, and she is leading the charge—proving that beauty and brains are not only compatible, but unstoppable.
