I spoke with my friend Judy Jiang, a lover of all things millennial and Y2K style.

Can you tell us a little bit about how you got started with this ‘millennial fashion’ style?

JJ: I actually got into millennial fashion a few years ago. I was browsing Instagram one day, and I saw a really cool outfit with a lot of silver and neon colours on it. It reminded me of the early 2000s, like music videos and movies back then. I just thought it was so unique and interesting compared to what everyone else was wearing. I started to delve deeper and because I’ve been renting in this part of East London, I’ve learnt that there are a lot of millennial fashion shops in this area too.

South and East London seems to be a real centre for this style. What do you think makes this an ideal place for Y2K fashion?

JJ: I think it’s because the area is diverse and creative. There are a lot of vintage shops and independent boutiques that carry the best of the early 2000s. Also, people here are very open to trying new things and expressing themselves through fashion. It’s not just about catching up with trends, it’s about expressing your own views on fashion and having fun with it. Y2K style fits in with this atmosphere.

Speaking of trends, Y2K fashion is an interesting mix of nostalgia and modernity. How do you balance these two elements in your own style?

JJ: For me, the most important thing is to find pieces that have a millennial classic feel, like low-rise jeans or exaggerated jewellery, and then pair them in a way that feels fresh and chic. Maybe pair an old-school graphic t-shirt with modern trainers or add a cool accessory like a bum bag. That’s what I think of as mixing old and new.

With social media playing such an important role in fashion these days, how do you think platforms like TikTok and Instagram have influenced the resurgence of Y2K style?

JJ: They’re a big part of it. I mean, you can see a lot of people sharing their Y2K outfits and getting inspiration from other people. It’s like a global fashion community where trends spread super-fast. But I also think it’s important to stay true to the original spirit of Y2K. It’s not just about copying what you see online, it’s about understanding the culture and the fun, rebellious energy behind it. I hope people keep that in mind as they explore the genre.

By Jiayi Wan ins:Judy_x05 The millennial fashion scene is causing a stir on the streets of South and East London.
