As Seen On Screen: The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

A breakdown of Will Smith’s iconic street style

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air burst onto our screens in 1990, rocket launching Will Smith’s career and birthing street style as we know it. Will’s style clashes with everything in his aunty and uncle’s opulent Bel-Air home, and reflects his working class, West Philly roots. His unique use of colour and sportswear are almost as iconic as the Carlton dance. Thanks to Snatch, you too can look as fresh as the prince on a sunny LA day.

This iconic look underpins everything that made Will’s 90s style so iconic – colourful prints, snapback caps and cool kicks.

The stripey tee

This look showcases just one of the rainbow array of stripey t-shirts Will wears in the show, all of which are just as bold as him.

Brands such as Dickies, Levi’s, Vans and Carhartt all have stripey tees like this one available on Vinted. Size up for that oversized look, just like Will and remember; the brighter, the better.

The shorts

If you want to stand out from the crowd of Jorts and O’Neills this summer, Will’s whacky patterned shorts could be the choice for you. Yes, they are a statement piece but if you’re aiming to dress like the fresh prince, you most likely don’t mind that.

Surprisingly, it’s easiest to find shorts like these by searching for swimming or beach shorts. Brands such as Topman, Next and Speedo will also yield great results when searched on Vinted.

The cap

Will was rarely spotted without a cap in the show; in this look, the cap matches the colour of his t-shirt exactly. So, to recreate it, you’ll want to do this too. New Era is a great brand to look out for, sporting a variety of colourways with one of them sure to match your fit.

It is slightly off-putting to think of buying a vintage hat but give it a good wash and you’ll be grand. Wear backwards for ultimate street cred.

The kicks

The shoes Will wears here are Nike Air Jordan 5’s; these are the shoes he wears the most in the shows run, and the ones most associated with his character. So much so, that a special edition replica of the trainer was released in 2018 to celebrate Smith’s 50th birthday, though they’re near impossible to get your hands on as they were limited edition.

Replicate the look with Jordans in other colourways, which are readily available to buy second-hand on Vinted and Depop. Or, if Jordans are above your price point, high Vans have the same retro skater vibe but won’t break the bank.

So, that’s how you can get the look. To really go the extra mile, pair with a 90s cassette player and over-ear wired headphones.
