Did you know that you are not the only one living in your home? No, we’re not talking about insects; we’re bringing plants into the picture. We often get plants to make a house seem like a home. While they may not be pets, they can be just as comforting; they elevate the quality of our homes and bring colour and joy into our lives.
A home is more than walls and furniture; it is a space that reflects personality, warmth, and comfort. One of the easiest ways to transform any living space is by introducing houseplants. Beyond decoration, plants soften interiors, add texture, and create a calming environment that makes a house truly feel like home.
We asked Dan from Nunhead Gardeners Nursery, a London-based plant specialist, to give us his TOP 10 plants that can elevate your home (and can survive even the most amateur plant parent!)
1. Snake Plant: The Effortless Essential
If there is one plant every home should have, it is the snake plant. Known for its tall, upright leaves and striking green patterns, the snake plant fits effortlessly into almost any room.
What makes it ideal for homes is its resilience. Dan says that snake plants can survive in direct sunlight, low light, or almost no light, and they prefer to dry out completely between waterings.
This makes it perfect for busy households or beginners who may forget to water regularly. Placed in a living room corner, hallway, or bedroom shelf, snake plants provide a clean, modern look while requiring minimal attention.
2. Jade Plant: A Symbol of Prosperity
Often called the money plant, according to old Feng Shui practices, the jade plant is believed to bring good luck and prosperity to a home. Beyond symbolism, it is also a beautiful addition to interiors.
With its thick, glossy leaves and tree-like structure, jade plants gradually grow into small sculptural plants that look particularly striking on coffee tables, desks, or windowsills.
“Over time, they mature into miniature indoor trees, making them both decorative and meaningful”, says Dan.
3. Rubber Tree: Bringing the Outdoors Inside
For homes that want a dramatic statement piece, the rubber tree is an excellent choice. Its large, glossy leaves and tall structure make it feel almost like an indoor tree.
Rubber trees adapt well to a range of lighting conditions and only need watering roughly every two weeks in summer and even less in winter.
Placed beside a sofa or in a bright corner, the rubber tree adds height and depth to a room while creating a lush, outdoor-inspired atmosphere indoors.
4. Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia Nicolai): Tropical Elegance
To turn your home into a tropical escape, Dan recommends the bird of paradise plant.
This plant produces large, dramatic leaves that instantly make any space feel vibrant and lush. While it may not flower frequently indoors in the UK, its bold foliage alone makes it a favourite for modern homes.
Positioned in a well-lit living room or near large windows, it creates a striking visual centrepiece.
5. Anthurium: The Flowering Favourite

If your home needs a pop of colour, the anthurium is the perfect solution. Recognised for its glossy leaves and vibrant pink flowers, Dan says, “The anthurium is known as one of the longest-flowering indoor plants, producing blooms for most of the year.”
This makes it ideal for adding colour to kitchens, entryways, or dining tables where a touch of brightness can instantly lift the mood of a space.
6. Monstera (Cheese Plant): The Iconic Instagram Plant
According to Dan, the monstera, often called the cheese plant, has become one of the most recognisable houseplants in modern interiors.
Its large, split leaves create a bold aesthetic that works particularly well in contemporary homes. In addition to its visual appeal, the monstera is also famously easy to care for, making it suitable even for beginners.
Placed near a bright window, it grows quickly and fills a room with lush greenery.
7. Terrariums: A Miniature Indoor Garden

Not technically a single plant, terrariums are small glass containers that hold multiple plants and create a self-contained ecosystem.
They function as both décor and greenery, blending plants with homeware aesthetics. Perfect for coffee tables, shelves, or bedside tables, terrariums bring nature into the home compactly and artistically.
8. Hoya: The Stylish Trailing Plant
Hoyas are beloved for their trailing vines and delicate leaves. These plants add softness and movement to interiors, especially when placed on shelves or in hanging pots.
Dan also says that they are semi-succulents, meaning they require very little maintenance and watering.
Their cascading growth makes them ideal for creating cosy, layered interiors that feel warm and lived-in.
9. Schefflera (Umbrella Plant): Glossy and Low Maintenance

Schefflera plants are becoming increasingly popular due to their large, glossy leaves and easy care requirements.
They tolerate low light conditions while still maintaining a tropical appearance, making them perfect for homes that may not receive abundant sunlight.
Placed in a hallway or living room corner, the schefflera adds a sense of fullness and greenery without requiring constant attention.
10. Aglaonema (Chinese Evergreen): Colour Without Effort
Are you hunting for something that is visually striking but also low-maintenance? Dan says that Aglaonema plants are an ideal option. Their leaves often feature bold patterns and colours, including vibrant pink varieties.
Additionally, they tolerate both low and bright light and can survive occasional neglect. This makes them perfect for bedrooms, offices, or spaces where easy care is essential.
