For Gen Z, a bedroom is more than a place to rest but a way to express themselves creatively. To quote Architectural Digest, “Your space should be your sanctuary.” Gen Z takes this further than just getting a good night’s sleep, using it to express themselves creatively in their own space. In an era when the decor of a space is crucial to its ‘aesthetic’, the look of a room is an important way for Gen Z to express their identity.
Turning off the ‘big light’
For a lot of Gen Z, mood lighting is everything, which we see from the viral TikTok sound “Never use the big light”. We saw this with the boom in LED lighting in bedrooms (in the late 2010s to early 2020s) and then again with the subsequent boom in the trend of using fairy lights for mood lighting. Lamps, night lights, projectors, etc., are considered great for creating ambience and making sure that the big light stays off at all costs!

Trinkets and souvenirs
Another way Gen Z is choosing to transform their spaces is through the art of displaying their personal treasures. Trinkets aren’t just about what you own but also how you display them. Gen Z have found very interesting ways to do so, such as bracelets stacked on wine bottle necks or earring collections hung within picture frames.
Sartorial decor
For Gen Z, clothing itself can be considered decorative in a space. Upcycling clothes and repurposing them into furniture, blankets, tapestries, etc., are some of the many ways zoomers combine their sense of style with ideals of sustainability. It seems like there’s no better way to express their personal tastes than showing off the clothes they like to wear. 20-year-old fashion student, Kamal, says, “I use my rolling rack to show my coolest clothes. It’s easy access, and it can genuinely add to my room’s aesthetic”.
The art of wall art
Wall art and posters have been consistent throughout the generations, according to Pinterest boards and trending TikToks/social media posts, Gen Z has reinvented the bedroom poster. Today, Gen Z’s wall art often blends retro and current motifs to create a nostalgic yet modern feel for bedroom wall decoration. Combining this with unique poster layouts adds a more unique element to Gen Z’s space. With the effort that goes into making posters today, such as Photoshop, wall art seems less about idolising your favourite celebrity and more about expressing your creativity and curating the ideal aesthetic for your space.

Green thumb emergence
According to this independent article, studies show that Gen Z are the biggest fans of house plants, with reports showing that people aged 18-24 years olds own an average of 10 houseplants. Whether it’s for aesthetic or well-being reasons, adding a green touch to your space is growing popular with Gen z.
