Style of drag : Raver

Before you started drag, were you aware of any drag kings?

“Very little, actually. The industry hadn’t given that part of drag much attention. Fortunately for us, we are moving forward in a positive direction. People already understand us kings and the value behind it all. Even me and I am from Spain!”

Do you think any drag king competition shows have the ability to appear on our television screens?

“Without a shadow of a doubt! Currently, I’ve only been able to watch drag king programs on small platforms such as Drag King España, but they’ve been so fabulous that soon, someone will do something for mainstream T.V. All it’ll take is that one show to have that domino effect. I’ll love to see us kings work to dominate that field.”

You mention the ability of drag being able to hit mainstream T.V. What does being a King represent for you?

“It’s made me stronger and has made me a braver person. I actually believe in myself and my talent now. My persona of Adel isn’t much of an act to me either, I’ve sculpted it into my real-life needs. At first, I really thought they were two completely separate worlds, but Adel has taught me so much that he’s become part of my life by 100%. I love him!”

If you could give any advice to the aspiring kings discouraged by the domination of queens in the industry, what would it be?

“I always thought that drag would be the thing to bring out that person I wanted to be. Little by little, I realised that, in truth, that’s the person I actually am. I am brave, talented and optimistic, and there is nothing better than doing what makes you happy. That people enjoy it too and are happy with your art is just a plus.”

“We feel you, Adel! Hopefully, with GiGi’s work ethic, we can make this advice universal. Before we conclude, there’s one more stop we’re making. We can’t miss getting insight from a veteran in the drag king game, so pack your bags and don’t forget your swimsuit. We’re going back to Brighton! This time Justin Slaysss is introducing me to his mentor, Raul Rover. Raul has accumulated over 15 years of experience in this field.
