Vintage lunch box purses, sunglasses made of compostable materials or upcycled beer towel sweaters: Stitch Up! selects the most creative and eco-friendly fashion designers of the moment. Characterised by their inventiveness and ethicality, these pieces are the perfect definition of what a green fashion collection can be.
Today, we will be exploring the work of the talented British designer Bethany Williams.
After graduating from The London College of Fashion, Bethany Williams launched her own sustainable fashion label in 2017. With the aim of creating positive social and environmental change, she focuses each of her collections on partnerships with local organisations or environmentally responsible companies. From working with Chris Carey’s, a family-run jeans recycling company, to using Adidas reclaimed fabrics or marine waste such as plastics filaments, Williams always prioritises sustainability. Partnering with social initiatives is also something that matters a lot for the young designer who is dedicated to her local London community.
Sober cuts, fitted shapes, a mix of colours and materials, Bethany Williams’ brand is beautifully unique and committed. At the junction of streetwear and fashion, her designs are often genderless; focusing instead on the individuality of the person wearing the outfit. Her commitment led her to be one of the 2019 LVMH Prize finalists, as well as being named emerging menswear talent at the Fashion Awards that same year, and co-founding the Emergency Designer Network in 2020.
For her new collection entitled All Our Children she decided to support The Magpie Project, which safe places for mothers and their young children living in insecure accommodation. She took inspiration from her London community, asking them on social media to submit their childhood memories and favourite clothing.
We particularly love her latest design, a purse made out of a vintage lunch box and woven fabrics from old children’s books. A real must.
