Fiona’s dungarees: ‘I felt completely transformed!’

Finding that perfect vintage treasure hits differently. It’s the simple pleasure of scoring that unique item that seems to have been made just for you. Every day a reader hypes up their best vintage find. Fiona, 23, reminisces about the day she found her dungarees.

What is your favourite vintage piece?

My vintage Liberty dungarees. They’re a light blue denim, slightly oversized, and unisex (meaning they have a sneaky little zip downstairs, which alas isn’t useful for me, but it’s still a fun feature!).

When and where did you buy it?

It was a frosty, sunny day in mid-February 2018 during my year abroad in Montreal. I was exploring a new area further north from my neighbourhood called the Mile End, which is known for its chic vintage boutiques. While some of these stores were a little pricey as they stocked a lot of reworked vintage, I came across one shop which was more in my price range. Behind all the handmade cards, sleek keyrings and strangely shaped candles were a bunch of racks, which was where I found what would soon be my perfect pair of dungarees.

What made them catch your eye?

Despite the baggy look on the hanger, once I put them on and rolled up the long legs, I felt like it just worked. I remember wearing a patterned headband and my hair up in a bun, and a plain, beige long-sleeved top. I looked at myself in the mirror and honestly, though it sounds cliché, I felt completely transformed! Before buying this, I hadn’t bought much vintage, and I was quite conservative in my style. Wearing this encouraged me to branch out a little more.

Why do you like them so much?

I love the light shade of denim and the little green Liberty logo, which I can sometimes match with other clothing – I’m a sucker for matching! As it’s slightly oversized it’s also brilliant if I’m having a bloated day as it’s so comfy.

How often do you wear them?

Once every two weeks, more or less. Sadly, as it’s quite a heavy material, once we get into the warmer months it can make me overheat! For a cold rainy day though, with some chunky black boots it’s an absolute winner.

How do they make you feel when you wear them?

Confident, and like myself. It feels like an emblem of me!

How much did they cost?

They cost me around £30 (it was around $50 CAD). I was a bit worried I wouldn’t get the wear out of it and that I’d chicken out and not feel great in it anymore, but it’s lasting me well and I still love it!

Can you describe a day when you wore this item that you remember fondly?

A night out in a funk nightclub in Montreal. I wore it with a sparkly purple crop top and some snow boots. Not the best look you may think, but I got complimented on it several times!
