TikTok taste-off: 10 recipes that live up to their hype

Recipes are always thriving on TikTok – it can be overwhelming to keep up with them but they’re worth it

Anyone with even the slightest interest in “FoodTok” has had the urge to recreate a recipe from a viral video. But ask yourself: how many of those recipes have you actually made? We’ve ranked 10 foods from TikTok based on their ingredients, steps and taste to help you decide what you could make next!

1. Hwachae

Hwachae originates from South Korea and is a punch with various contents. Think of it as the ultimate fruit punch – the combination of Sprite and strawberry milk (or any flavoured milk) may seem odd to some but it is surprisingly delicious when paired with berries and watermelon.

2. Lasagna soup

@eatpayylove

If you’ve never tried the viral lasagna soup, this is your sign to? This soup can be pretty filling so if you have leftovers, I recommend the @rubbermaidbrand brilliance glass containers! These containers are my all-time FAVORITE for food storage and will be perfect for storing all the soups you make this fall because they are 100% leak proof. They also have a beautiful stackable design to help you save space in your fridge and keep you organized?? #RubbermaidPartner   Ingredients 1 onion 4 cloves garlic 1 lb ground beef or Italian sausage or can do half and half 2 tbsp tomato paste 1 tsp each of dried oregano, dried parsley, red chili flakes, salt & pepper. 1 24 oz jar of marinara sauce 5 cups chicken broth ½ a box of lasagna sheets, broken up ½ cup heavy cream Fresh parsley, basil and spinach to your liking   Ricotta topping: Ricotta Mozzarella Parmesan Parsley Basil Plus, some of seasonings listed above I do the topping to taste so feel free to add as much or as little as you prefer!

In this video, an all-time favourite food is being reinvented and turned into soup, which makes it much easier to make. One commentator, @jaduxx, added “zucchini and carrots” to theirs which made it taste “divine”. Despite being a great recipe, lasagna soup has made it near the top of the list as it does require many ingredients.

3. Upside-down pastries

@feelgoodfoodie

If you’re looking for some fun recipes to make with apples this season, check out these upside down apple tarts made with just puff pastry, honey, cinnamon, egg and my favorite Michigan-grown apples! #upsidedownappleturnover #appletart INGREDIENTS 1 apple 1 puff pastry sheet 6 tablespoons honey, plus more to taste 6 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 small egg, whisked Powdered sugar, for dusting

Upside-down pastries can be sweet or savoury however the creator in this video opted for sweet apple and honey pastries. This three-ingredient recipe is perfect for anyone who loves to bake but can rarely find the time to. Notably, this food hack trended near the beginning of 2023 yet people are still making videos about it.

4. Marry me chicken

Marry me chicken is a sautéed chicken dish in a creamy sauce with sun-dried tomatoes. This hearty meal lives up to its name and is not only full of flavour but is also versatile as it can be paired with pasta, rice, mash, etc.

5. Strawberry yoghurt bites

Strawberry yoghurt bites are self-explanatory – strawberries are diced, mixed with yoghurt and then frozen. Afterwards, it is dipped in chocolate but you could even omit this. @makaveli commented, “I’ve seen this over 5 times on my “For You Page” in less than 30 mins”, proving this food hack deserves viral status.

6. Crispy parmesan potatoes

@kalejunkie

Comment if you’d make them! Crispy Garlic Parmesan Crusted Potatoes #tiktokpotatoes #easyrecipes #holidayrecipes Makes 6-8 servings 1 lb mini yukon gold potatoes, halved 2 tb olive oil 1 tb dried parsley 1 tb garlic powder 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp ground black pepper 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted 1 1/2 cups freshly grated parmigiano reggiano Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Wash potatoes and cut them in half. Then, take a sharp knife and score them into a diamond shape. Transfer the potatoes to a large bowl and toss with olive oil, parsley, garlic powder and salt. Set aside. Next, grate the parmigiano reggiano cheese. Pour melted butter on top and mix until you get a thick paste. Transfer the mixture to a large baking dish and spread into an even layer. Take each potato half and press it into the cheese, cut side down. Repeat until all potatoes are in the dish. Bake for 25-26 minutes. Remove from the oven. Let the potatoes rest for 10 minutes so the cheese hardens and then take a spatula and remove from the pan. Break into pieces and enjoy!

Potato recipes trend almost every month and rightfully so, as they are often delicious and convenient. In this low-effort recipe, the potatoes are placed in a golden mixture of parmesan and butter and are left to cook in the oven.

7. Feta eggs

@graceelkus

5-minute feta fried eggs: you’ll thank me next time you’re hangry ? Inpired by Ali Slagle’s potato, egg, and cheese tacos ? Heat small nonstick skillet over medium heat. Crumble in feta around perimeter. Crack egg into center; season w/ black pepper & red pepper flakes (no need to add salt, the feta is plenty salty) Cover pan and cook until white is set, yolk is still runny, and cheese is unbelievably crispy. Serve atop toast, w/ hash browns, or my personal fave: in a charred tortilla with avocado & lime. You can oil the skillet, esp. if you’re not using nonstick, but I find the cheese gets crispier w/o More tips on my IG @graceelkus #friedeggs #feta

Feta eggs are TikTok’s favourite egg recipe right now, and the easiest to make on this list. Feta cheese is sprinkled onto a pan and then an egg is fried directly on top. You can expect this to taste good as even Gordon Ramsay has approved of this recipe.

8. Smashed ‘Big Mac’ tacos

These tacos quickly gained popularity as many claimed they tasted exactly like a McDonald’s Big Mac. Cooking this does not require any complex cooking methods and the ingredients list is surprisingly not too long. @kayk commented, advising that the “burger needs to cook independently of the tortilla, [as] it does not stick and the tortilla gets greasy”.

9. Chopped sandwiches

@chefdwightsmith

Lmao ? was it tasty AF? yes!✅ Would I go out of my way to chop another sandwich like this? ❌ with that being said it was fun to try and it did in fact taste good so no food was wasted on the making of this. Sandwiches are a staple for anyone who packs their lunch but making them over time can seem tedious. Chopped sandwiches, albeit a little messy, are made by finely dicing your ingredients together and stuffing them into a bread of your choice. The sandwich fillings are thoroughly mixed, ensuring you taste a bit of everything in each bite.

10. Kewpie mayo ramen

Who knew only a few ingredients could enhance your instant noodles? Egg yolk and kewpie mayo thicken the broth, making it flavourful but also less spicy (perfect for those who are intolerant towards spice). If this recipe isn’t to your liking, consult TikTok for more instant ramen noodle recipes.
