We asked Scotland fans about their favourite matchday foods

At 8pm tonight Scotland and England will clash in the group stage of this year’s Euros tournament. Fans on both sides of the border will be nervously glued to the screen, but what will they be eating and drinking?

At Clever Gretel we back the underdog. It is Scotland’s first time in the Euros for 23 years, so we asked Scottish football fans what their favourite matchday snacks are on Reddit. Our post garnered a lot of responses:

One user said his go to football snack was, “Half a bottle of Buckfast poured into a coke bottle because we’re not allowed to have pints at the match up here,” he said referring to the Scottish ban on drinking at football matches which came about after a riot at the 1980 Scottish Cup final between Rangers and Celtic.

Kilmarnock pie, was another favourite, the pie was created for Kilmarnock Football Club and unlike most pies associated with Scottish football is a steak pie rather than a Scotch pie (which are usually filled with mutton and haggis).

“Killie pie and a tinnie of Tenants. Matchday breakfast of champions,” said a Reddit user referring to the Scottish draught lager, as well as the pie.

John Nicoll, 62, lives just outside Aberdeen, and told Clever Gretel he likes a bridie. It’s a Scottish pie that is similar to a Cornish pasty in that it contains minced steak, butter and beef suet.

“I think a Munchy Box and Tennents would be a combo happening that is probably under the radar,” said another Reddit user referring to the takeaway boxes that can be typically found in the West of Glasgow and contain an assortment of fast-food including pizza, chips, kebab meat and fried chicken.

The response that perhaps most reflected the feelings of Scottish fans ahead of the match, however, was: “A fat joint to ease the nerves, couple of bacon rolls a line of prop and a bottle of tonic.”

You can catch England playing against Scotland tonight at 8pm UK time.
