Pizza: simplicity is key

Isn’t it mad to think that a simple combination of ingredients on a stretchy bed of dough could be so popular? An average of three billion pizzas are sold in the United States each year! Try our easy as pie recipe below and step back in time to 18th century Naples where pizzas properly came to be what we know them as now. Pop on your best apron, because this one is messy.

Time: 40-45 mins
Cost: £
Serves: 3-4
Difficulty: Moderate

Equipment you’ll need:
A big mixing bowl
Chopping board
Knife
An oven

Ingredients:

500g bread flour
1 bag of instant bread yeast
2 tsp of sugar
400g of warm water
50ml of olive oil 1 tsp salt
300g of tomato sauce with salt and pepper
250g of mozzarella + more to put fresh on top
3-6 fresh basil leaves to garnish.

Method*:

1. In a big bowl put the flour, yeast and sugar and mix well
2. Add water, oil and salt
3. After all the flour is mixed well cover the bowl, put in a warm place and wait for 1/2h until the dough has doubled
4. Then place on a oiled baking tray flatting it evenly with the fingers
5. Warm up the tomato sauce and distribute all over the dough
6. Leave it to rise another 10 min while warming the oven up at 200C
7. Place inside the oven and bake for 15/20 min

9. When the pizza is ready add fresh basil and fresh chunks of Buffalo mozzarella.

Gretel’s tip: pair with a nice red wine. How about one that we rated from our Tried and Tested series?
